Do We Buy, Sell or Service Mountain Bikes? What MKP Does and Does Not Do

By Mike · Updated 20 July 2026

Every week we get calls and messages about mountain bikes: selling them, buying them, servicing them. We appreciate every one, and this page exists so you get a straight answer immediately instead of waiting on a reply.

The short version: we are specialists, and mountain bikes are not our specialty.

What we do

MKP Bikes deals in road, gravel and triathlon bikes. We sell inspected pre-owned road, gravel and tri bikes, we stock new bikes from Tavelo, Merida, Giant, Orbea and Java, we buy and trade quality drop-bar bikes, and we run professional bike fits from our Cheltenham studio.

Specialisation is the whole point of the shop. Because we only handle drop-bar bikes, every bike we inspect, every fit we run and every trade-in we value draws on deep knowledge of one category rather than shallow knowledge of five. It is why we are comfortable standing behind used carbon road bikes, which most shops will not touch.

What we do not do

We do not buy, sell or trade mountain bikes, hybrids, flat-bar commuters, e-bikes or kids bikes, regardless of brand or condition. It is nothing personal about your bike; a good MTB deserves a shop that lives and breathes suspension, dropper posts and tubeless setups, and that is not us.

The same goes for servicing: we do not offer customer servicing at the moment on any bike, including road bikes. Our workshop time goes into inspecting and preparing the bikes we sell and running fits, and we would rather do those two things properly than do five things averagely.

If you have a mountain bike to sell

The active channels in Melbourne are Facebook Marketplace, MTB-specific buy/sell groups, and trade-ins at MTB-focused shops. Two of our guides apply to any bike, not just road: the 15-point used bike checklist will help you present and price your bike honestly (and spot issues before a buyer does), and if you are buying a used MTB privately, the carbon inspection guide works exactly the same on a carbon mountain frame.

If you are not sure what you have, or what you want

Some of the calls we get are really a different question in disguise: "I have a hybrid and I want to get into road riding" or "should my next bike be a gravel bike instead of a mountain bike for the riding I actually do?" Those conversations we are very happy to have. Gravel bikes in particular cover a surprising share of what casual MTB owners actually ride. If that might be you, start with our gravel vs road guide or come and talk to us in Cheltenham.

For everything drop-bar, we are here: pre-owned, new, fitting, buying and trading. For everything else, we hope this page saved you a phone call, and we mean that kindly.

Frequently asked questions

Does MKP Bikes buy or sell mountain bikes?

No. We specialise in road, gravel and triathlon bikes, both pre-owned and new, and we do not buy, sell or trade mountain bikes, hybrids, e-bikes or kids bikes.

Can I get my mountain bike serviced at MKP?

No. We do not offer servicing at the moment on any bike, mountain or road. We are a sales and fitting specialist, and our workshop time goes into inspecting and preparing the bikes we sell.

Do you do bike fits for mountain bikes or hybrids?

No. Our fitting expertise is in road, gravel and triathlon positions, and we keep our fits to those disciplines so every session draws on deep, current experience.

Where should I sell a used mountain bike in Melbourne?

Facebook Marketplace and MTB-specific buy/sell groups are the most active channels, and some MTB-focused shops offer trade-ins. Our used-bike checklist and inspection guides apply to any bike, so they are worth reading before you sell or buy privately.
